When a critically ill child or newborn needs to be transported from a pediatrician's office or hospital to a facility where they can receive advanced treatment, wouldn't it be reassuring to use a fully staffed "mobile intensive care unit" for the transfer? The children of Northeast Florida and South Georgia have that option. The combination of a uniquely outfitted ambulance and the Wolfson Children's Hospital Kids Kare transport team furnish the equipment and medical staff to give continuity of care during the move.

The newest Kids Kare ambulance to join the fleet (added December 2003) has the capacity to simultaneously transport two patients. The ambulance contains equipment necessary to monitor and continue care for one or two critically ill patients. Some of the equipment available includes:

  • Cardio-respiratory monitors with defibrillator
  • Ventilators for infants and children who need help breathing
  • IV pumps
  • Oxygen
  • Medicines and fluids
  • Supplies

Kids Kare, the specialized transport team for Wolfson Children's Hospital, has been available since 1998. The transport team provides services for children and their families in Northeast Florida and South Georgia and averages approximately 40 patient transports every month. The team transports critically ill newborns and pediatric patients with cardiovascular or medical/surgical emergencies, bringing them to Wolfson's Level three (highest level) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Unit for specialized services, or Pediatric Emergency Center. Wolfson is the primary referral hospital for newborns with cardiac disease and non-trauma surgical services. Kids Kare is the critical first step to bringing these infants immediate medical interventions - even while on the way to Wolfsons.

Each nurse on the team has over 4000 hours experience in neonatal/pediatric critical care nursing as well as special training in neonatal and pediatric transport stabilization. The respiratory staff each have a minimum 2000 hours as a respiratory therapist in level three neonatal/pediatric critical care. The team receives medical direction from a neonatalogist and pediatric critical care physician with special training in transport medicine. A neonatalogist or pediatric intensivist is consulted and oversees each individual transport. The transport team manages a variety of medical and surgical conditions and provides interventions, such as advanced airway and respiratory care, ventilator support and intravenous line placement and therapy. Century Ambulance Services provides a paramedic and emergency medical technician for additional support during transport.

Kids Kare service area extends north to Savannah, Ga.; south to Daytona Beach; and west to Pensacola with trips as far south as Miami when needed. When time is critical because of a patient's condition, Kids Kare works closely with Baptist Medical Center's Life Flight helicopter service to transport the team quickly. For patients who require transport from areas outside of Life Flight's service area, arrangements are made with AirTrek the fixed-wing aeromedical transport service which provides air transport for the Kids Kare team.

The Kids Kare ambulance was made possible by the generous funding of The Women's Board of Wolfson Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald Charities, Jaguar player Kyle Brady, ex-Jaguar player Pete Mitchell, and the Weaver Family Foundation.
