Kids Are Not Little Adults
The range of healthcare Wolfson provides is a reflection of our philosophy, which centers on the word "children." Children are not little adults, and they have their own needs and health concerns. That understanding has led us and our partner institutions to develop centers of excellence, or regional referral centers. These centers include areas such as orthopaedics and pediatric forms of diseases, such as diabetes and cancer. Our other centers of excellence include the Brunell Family Children's Neurodiagnostic Center, which serves children with epilepsy and other neurological disorders, and the Pediatric Cardiovascular Center, a joint program with the University of Florida that provides treatments and screenings for children with heart diseases and rhythm disturbances.
Wolfson's commitment to treating children, not little adults, is also fully evident in its Outpatient Surgery Unit and Emergency Department. Both of these areas employ innovative anesthesia techniques that allow children to return home as soon as possible after surgery. An ambitious venture with Nemours to create a "virtual" minimally invasive surgery program is another way in which we are striving to meet the needs of children and their families. This center will increase our number of minimally invasive procedures - which have shorter hospital stays compared to open surgery procedures. In addition, its "virtual" component will allow Wolfson and Nemours physicians to extend their caring expertise to an even larger geographic area. |
